DJ Bigg Mann Bio Reputation is a cornerstone to longevity in one’s career, and this is a fact recognized and honored by Connecticut’s DJ Bigg Mann. He combines a great personality with an array of deejay skills harkening back to days when the sound provider’s job was to keep the crowd entertained.
Initially inspired by a friend on the turntables at a block party, and influenced by veterans such as DJ Cash Money, Jazzy Jeff and Lovebug Starski, Bigg Mann began his radio career 15 years ago at a community-based radio station in Hartford. Today he is one of Connecticut’s most recognized deejays, and is the mid-day on-air personality on WZMX Hot 93.7, with a name that only continues to gain prominence.
Getting the respect of the people and staying on top of his game has been a hard fought battle for Bigg Mann. “Knowing what’s fresh and new, what people want when it comes to parties, what they want to hear on the radio, is more than just having records,” he explains. “It’s doing your research. I’m a deejay but I’m the biggest fan of other deejays - I’ll go out and watch what they’re doing. They might play a record that I haven’t really thought to play in a club, so it’s always a learning experience for me.”
Bigg Mann has also mastered the very different trades of spinning at clubs, commandeering a radio show, and cranking out hot mixtapes. Known for being a hypeman behind the wheels, his whole philosophy to the art is making sure a good time is had by anyone at a party where he’s spinning.
Having performed at parties for the likes of P. Diddy, The Lox, The Clipse, Ying Yang Twins, Cassidy, Mobb Deep, Jagged Edge, Freeway, Beanie Sigel, and Memphis Bleek amongst others, he feels it just as important to move your everyday people as well as celebrities. “I want constant energy all the time,” he explains. “I’m always looking at a party as if I’m on the dance floor partying. What would I wanna hear next that would just keep me jumping and sweating? I’ll probably be dead tired, but that next song has to be the song that’s gonna keep me on the floor no matter how tired I am.”
K-Dub, a radio personality for 93.7, advocates Bigg Mann’s skills. “He is like the radio station’s secret weapon,” says K-Dub. “Whenever there is a party or a large crowd that needs to be hyped up, it is like, ‘Unleash the Bigg Mann!”.
To separate his radio show from the competition, Bigg Mann takes the creative approach by being more topic-driven and getting listeners involved. He takes his mixtape endeavors seriously, with a growing catalogue consisting of fan favorites like World of Blendz Vol. 1&2, Droppin Bombs, Street Dreams Vol. 1&2, Bigg Mann Returns, Classic Material Vol. 1&2 and Eblens New Flava Vols. 1-5. He takes a traditional stance on the craft, far different from today’s more popular mixtape deejays. “If it’s a mixtape then there should be mixing going on,” he asserts. “I’m not into playing an exclusive, stopping the song, talking and then playing another song - that’s not a mixtape. A mixtape is actual mixing going on, creativity, blends, cuts, scratches, the whole nine yards, taking a song and making it something different.”
Given his rising popularity, Bigg Mann takes his people skills to the next level as a motivational speaker at various elementary schools and high schools. Tom Smith Program Director for WQTQ 89.9 FM says of his associate: “Bigg Mann is one of the most well rounded people I have worked with. He can deejay, host a show, cut a commercial, speak to children, politicians, recording artists, actors and actresses and adapt to any situation that is thrown his way.”
Bigg Mann’s hard work and dedication has finally paid off for him. He is now the mid day personality at WZMX in Hartford, CT. There has already been proof of his ability to shine with him being rated number one in his time slot.
Bigg Mann’s future includes rocking parties internationally, radio syndication, and spreading his special brand of joy all around. “I’m a fun loving individual,” he says. I’m down to earth and not hard to approach. My ultimate goal is to make sure people are smiling at the end of the day.” |
